Volunteer20
Report
What motivates people to
volunteer? ♦ What experiences do volunteers desire?
♦ What actions will
help retain volunteers?
CONTACT Community Services’
study on volunteerism, underwritten by the Central New York Community
Foundation and conducted by Vincent McCabe, Inc., explored strategies
for the recruitment and retention of CNY volunteers. The
Volunteer20 initiative revealed six distinct profiles of
potential volunteers, each of which calls for its own type of appeals
for involvement. In support of the long-term vision held by CONTACT
and the Central New York Community Foundation for building community capital, the
initiative’s findings are being shared with interested not-for-profit
organizations.

Imagine asking everyone in the community to volunteer 20 minutes of
their time to complete a survey on what motivates them to volunteer.
That’s just what CONTACT Community Services did in the spring of
2005 and the results showed that, when it comes to recruiting
volunteers in Central New York, no one-size-fits-all program will be
effective. Results from the CONTACT Volunteer20 study
demonstrated that there are six distinct profiles of potential
volunteers. Through an understanding of these profiles,
organizations can optimize their appeals for new volunteers.
While these findings are vital to CONTACT and their continuous
recruitment program, they are also a powerful new tool for all
Central New York organizations seeking volunteers.
